<image:title>Blog - Naming a Goddess - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>The article Herb Caen wrote about ruth weiss. San Francisco Chronicle, B1, 1993. “A FINE funkiness: Beat Generation goddess Ruth Weiss (she launched the jazz-poetry readings at The Cellar) and trumpeter Cowboy Noyd will have their first reunion since what John Ross calls "the bad old days" on Jan. 21 at Dog Eared Books on Valencia. Only two bucks for this historic moment. They met 30 yrs. ago at Jimbo's Bop City when Ruth was a waitress and Cowboy the house trumpet… Absolutely no. Noyd is not Brooklynese for nerd. Devotees of rock drumming will want to know that Prairie Prince is at the traps for both Paul Kantner's Starship and Todd Rundgren at the Warfield tomorrow night. A benefit for worthy Presidio Hill School… Accdg. to a big proud sign, the messiest stretch of Highway 24 east of Orinda was "Adopted By the Contra Costa Times." When Don Swartz phoned to complain about the mess, the Times knew just what to do. Removed the sign… You read where British Airways is paying almost a million in damages for a "dirty tricks" campaign against Virgin Atlantic Airlines? One of the tricks, as Steven Sherman notes, was "attempts by British Airways representatives to impersonate Virgin employees." I knew those neon halos wouldn't fool anybody.”</image:caption>

<image:title>2021 - Maverick Poet Spotlight: Sur Ren Dirt - RWF: Congratulations on being named our 2021 Maverick Poet! What made you want to become a poet?</image:title>
<image:caption>Sur Ren Dirt: Poetry has lived inside of me for as long as I can remember. There was never a burning desire to be a poet, but rather an underlying knowing that has taken at least thirty-seven years to realize. Word magick visited younger versions of mySelf when least expected, when the body was in depths of shadow emotions spiraling inward, and often provided a lifesaving form of release for little Dirt. My words are potent, and up until a few months ago, I had only shared them with select people and audiences, including the trustworthy stack of journals strewn upon my desk. It's been such a wild ride to reconnect with younger versions of Self and alchemize life substance from years ago.</image:caption>

She has been reading and writing as long as she can remember and discovered her love of poetry over the pandemic as a way to express the emotions beginning to overflow from her mind. Her finalist poem, “the insssomniac hive mind,” explores the power of creative self-expression as a means to escape the pressures of a conformist society. The poem highlights Emi’s desire to use the platform of poetry to advocate for causes that she is passionate about, such as mental health and human rights.</image:caption>

<image:title>2023 - Maverick Poet Award Finalist: ....AND THE CHILDREN ARE WATCHING....</a> by UMI</image:title>
<image:caption>Issa Salih Umi is a poet (Presenter Of Eternal Truths) wno is the first of siblings born in the city of Chicago.. I poet because I have something to say. I poet a lot because I have A LOT to say. Beyond answering to the name poet. I consider myself a wordsmith, cosmic scribe, performance artist, and sound shape shifter. I have discovered the primary theme that write about is relationships with all beings/all life (who, what, when, where, and why?) What is my accountability and responsibility to insure that I give my best to diligently preserve, sustain, respect, honor, perpetuate that relationship ad infinitum . And The Children Are Watching.represents my response to those persons/nations/governments who profusely profess their love for children and offer up multitudes of oaths to protect them yet their actions/conducts/behaviors sacrifice their lives on the altars of war, poverty, violence, greed, ignorance, self-destructive behavior, indifference, hatred, dis-ease, and racism. The "... And The Children Are Watching" poem is to serve notice to those persons, nations, and governments that the Children (Of The World/Of The Sun/Of God have watched you and are watching you until they can take the necessary steps, ways, and means to respond in the appropriate manner.</image:caption>

<image:title>2023 - Youth Poet Award Finalist: “Acrylic Snippets of A Future</a>” by Megumi Jindo</image:title>
<image:caption>Megumi Jindo is a NYC high school senior and a spoken word poet and activist. One of the main issues that she advocates for is the betterment of the people on Earth, especially for children. Through writing and sharing “Acrylic Snippets of a Future,” she wants people to understand that we should try to cradle and achieve peace as much as possible so that children don’t need to go through the horrific ramifications of war and other impactful events on Earth. We all want to create a life for the next generation that’s fillled with the little moments of joyfulness that we’ve been able to feel at present and in our childhood. To fulfill that project, we must reflect on what has made us the most happiest and how can we then bless those hopes onto our next era of children. “Acrylic Snippets of a Future” is a vision to cherish: a calling to the world.</image:caption>

She was a winner of the Troubadour International Poetry Prize 2018 and was longlisted for the National Poetry Competition 2022. Specialising in ekphrasis, she finds endless fascination in the interplay between art and literature, the visual and the written, and finds it a useful tool for inviting discussion and impelling the dialogue forward. She describes her winning poem "Stone Pond" as an epic haiku; each three-line stanza of the poem stands alone as a haiku, just as Monadnock means the mountain that stands alone, in the Abenaki language. Taken together, these conventional haikus become one cohesive and rich description of the sensate natural world in and surrounding one of the Monadnock Region's most beautiful water bodies at the height of summer abundance. Stone Pond is a special place with which the poet has been privileged to form a deep and lasting connection.</image:title>

<image:title>2024 - Haiku Poetry Awards Finalist - Maya - Maya Odim is a poet who explores ways speech is made up of both words and how they are said whose writing is interested in telling stories of transition like: death (transitioning from earth), dancing (transitioning through movement), and living elements in relation to each other (transitioning through interactions). Maya also works interdisciplinarily to choreograph movement from poems both she and others have written, working to mount performances in community with others and in an effort to build with others. Their haiku, "You All Ways" considers the way one's spirit lives on after their physical body transitions in death.</image:title>
